More People Moving to Cities Census Shows

Summary: After the 2010 Census was recorded, officials noticed more people moving out of the suburbs and into the heavy populated cities. Now there is 80% of the population that lives in cities and urbanized areas. New York Currently has an estimated 18.4 million people living there.  California has a higher number of people living there with 35.4 million people, but considering its great size it was expected. 95% of the population is crowded into urban cities leaving more open space out in California. Other huge cities known like Chicago are seeing similar trends. These popular cities are becoming denser with each census taken and this issue is starting to worry people.

Reflection: I do not really think that this is a problem because there are always other places to live. No one is really forced to live in these heavily populated cities. Once people realize that a place may be overpopulated, they won’t move there. There are plenty suburban or rural areas in America or all around the world, that people can live. It will become a problem when whole states, countries, or continents, get over populated and crowded like the urban cities listed above. I am actually happy where I live because I am not far from the beach, far from urban cities like Philadelphia or New York, and not far from rural areas. I recently went to New York for a day trip for the second time ever in my life since I was little and it made me realize how small and insignificant you really are in the world. Just a single person in such a huge city, with a large name, can be overwhelming. Then it makes you think if there were any more people in this world, how I would feel then. Over population could become a real issue in the near future and the limiting factors we learned in class, and the trip to New York made all of those worries a reality.

Questions:
1: Why do you think more and more people are moving to highly populated cities? What are the dangers of this?
2: What are some limiting factors that could happen in those cities that could affect the population of the city or world as a whole?
3: What should we do to prevent or slow the overpopulation of those cities? Or should we leave it the way it is?

  1. I think it's very interesting how so many people are moving to cities. I agree with Maddy, being happy with where we live, because it's safe and convenient. I think one reason so many people are moving to cities is because the economy is so bad, and more job opportunities are available in the city than the country or rural areas. The only other reason I could think of for why people would want to move into cities is because they enjoy the fast paced living style, although that is not for me. I don't think this is a huge problem, unless crime goes up significantly or there aren't enough jobs or resources to go around.

To answer question number 2, some of the limiting factors that could happen in the city are a) a lack of food and water supply b) not enough work to go around, the human organisms are competing for specific niches c) especially in the city, the amount of housing available could not be sufficient, which may lead to an increase in homeless people.

  2. Opinion: I say, there must be some sort of reason why all of a sudden there has been an large noticeable increase in the number of people moving into cities. This confuses me because I don't understand why this would happen. Personally I dont really mind wheather people move into cities or not. Cities have lots of jobs, and with an economy like the one we have now, most likely anyone would go anywhere to get a job. This may be one reason why people are migrating to cities.
Reflection: This article made me think of my uncle. He lives up in New York city and is a very good/talented musician. He travels around the city and suburbs playing at bars and such. This article made me think of how there would be more opertunities for people like him, and others. ( Ex: Fast food carts that go around and sell food) With more people comming into cities, this requires more entertianment for these people and more food, creating more business for people like my Uncle and other small jobs that require amounts of people to be sucussfull and contince to run their own business.
Question 3: I say we leave it the way it is. As of now we dont seam to have a problem with the populaiton. We might have to build a few more buildings here and there for new people moving into cities, but thats ok. If the population level starts to cause a major disturbance in the way of life, then some action must be taken. As of today, there is no such problam so we dont need to worry

  3. Reflection: I'm actually surprised that people are mainly moving into bigger cities. I would think that they would move to a safer, smaller, and trusting neighborhood. Sure you can go to stores a lot faster than being farther away with a safe community but there could be common mugging and shootings but it depends where your at. I don't think that people mainly moving to cities is a problem since more people means more living space but if that many people can live in 1 state.
Response to Question 1: I think people are moving into cities because of job opportunities and how convenient it is to get to stores. The dangers of this is the amount of traffic there is and how dangerous the community could be.

  4. I think the overpopulation in the cities is a problem. One New York is so jammed up with traffic that people who actually live there just walk. I went on a tour around New York once, and the tour guide said that people live an extra 5 years because they get exercise from the walks they do. I found that tour stupid for two reasons. One apparently New York tour guides are notoriously bad. Two the more I think about the statistic th more I think it is false because there is, so much polution from all the cars that try to drive through New York.
I would like to respond to question 1. I think people want to live in the city because it is so convient to be able to walk to your job, and have everything you need in walking distance. The obvious danger about the city is the gigantic amount of pollution.
