If you think about going to California for vacation soon watch out for Laguna Beach! In Japan a failed nuclear reactor in Fukashima led radioactive leaks into the California Coast. Scientists also think that the fish might had eaten the kelp or each other which help spread the radiation. According to the scientists the cesium and iodine is spreading in the coast and it is probably in the fish and the kelp. Fortunately in South California the seaweed radiation
My reaction to this is not that surprised because of Japans nuclear disaster in 2011 but I am kind of sad since I eat fish sometimes. I hope that they can somehow clean up the radiation in the California Coast.
1. How do you think this is going to affect Fisherman
2. Do you think this will spread out to oceans?
3. From the rating of 1 - 10, 1 being the worst and 10 being the best what would you choose and explain why.
I think this is a very predictable outcome from the past. When the tsunami hit Japan last year i expected marine life to be affected as well because of the amount of damage that happened on shore. Now a year later I realize that it doesn't only affect Japan alone. I eat fish also but I am hoping the fish I eat is caught near the east coast. Although it will probably only be a matter of time before the radiation makes it way all through the water across the globe. To answer question number two I think it would spread out through the oceans because of currents and fish being eaten and absorbed into its predators body. Fish also travel and migrate, and it would only be a matter of time before it would reach near and far places across the globe.
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty sad. I wonder if the radiation just stays in the water forever or eventually is taken out somehow. This also reminds me of the pollutant thing we learned in class. How the pollutants in aniams increase alot as you go up the food chain. And us humans are at the top of that food chain. I wouldn't be suprised if some cases of radiation poisioning (In food) are seen in California. I also have friends that live out in California, and now after reading this article I hope they know what could be in the sea food that they eat. Disasters like this dont happen very often but when they do us as the human race should be prepared to fix the situation, or at least help it. To answer number 1 I think that it will have a dramatic impact on the fishermen. Once people start to realize what might be in their food they wont buy anymore. This will hurt the economy and will threaten the fishermens jobs.

DeleteI think this helps show how using radioactivity for anything is extremely bad for the environment and the people. I am very surprised though that the radiation made it's way all the way over to california. Hopefully it doesn't make it's way over to the waters and oceans of more places, because it could be extremely detrimental to all the surrounding ecosystems. Hopefully, like during the BP oil spill, scientists will be able to find a solution to the problem that is okay for the environment.
ReplyDeleteTo answer number 1, I think fishermen are going to get hit the worst out of everyone. Not only could they get sick, but they could get others sick by selling radioactive fish, or they could lose theirs jobs completely because there's not enough fish
This kind of reminds me of the Simpson's movie with the radioactive fish with the three eyes. This is not good for the fish business, and people that like fish. I'm pretty sure you can't eat radioactive fish.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 1: This will affect fisherman very negatively considering they can't sell radioactive fish to eat.
